Numerous studies have been conducted into the appeal of printed media with the same result every time:
OFFLINE = INSPIRATION
ONLINE = INFORMATION
A second important outcome of the research was that the truthfulness of articles in printed media is deemed higher than that of online articles. With offline media, the ‘sender’ is clear. That gives the reader the feeling they are reading reliable information compiled by an experienced team / editor / publisher. Finally, it emerged that curling up with a magazine provides a genuine moment of leisure and gives the environment the signal that: ‘I am busy doing something for myself now; so just leave me in peace’.
In the beginning of July 2021 we published th first edition of FIETS-NL, a brand new magazine produced for and by cycling enthusiasts. With an initial print run of 50,000, FIETS-NL is already one of the biggest players on the Dutch market. FIETS-NL is free and thanks to a sophisticated distribution system, is 100% guaranteed to reach the cycling and E-bike enthusiast target group. FIETS-NL is aimed at young people, hedonists, commuters and naturally, everyone who enjoys cycling. FIETS-NL provides the reader with information about the most diverse subjects, such as product presentations, gadgets, maintenance tips, lease constructions, day trips, attractions, tour excursions and national and international holidays.
In the Netherlands, the bicycle has evolved from a regular mode of commuting into a hip, dynamic, healthy and green means of recreation. The Netherlands is the undisputed global leader in respect of bicycle ownership. Did you know that the total number of bicycles in the Netherlands is almost 23 million? That means there are more bicycles than people in the Netherlands!
The advent of the E-bike has strengthened the bicycle’s potential in the Netherlands even more. In 2007, E-bikes accounted for a 6% share of total bicycle sales. In 2019, that share had increased to over 50% of total bicycle sales. In addition to the city bike, there are now bicycles with electric pedal support in other segments too, including mountain bikes, ladies’ bikes, pocket bikes and hybrid bicycles.
The Dutch like taking their bicycles along on holiday: on the back of the car, in the caravan or camper, on the train, on the boat, even on the plane. This trend is bringing about intensive investment in bicycle tourism abroad. Dedicated cycling lanes, specially signposted routes for cyclists and E-bike charging points along the routes are increasing exponentially.
Business cycling becomes a very interesting market in the Netherlands. The Dutch government is facilitating regularly new lease options because E-bikes play an important role in addressing the issue of congestion and the lack of parking. Research has shown that use of E-bikes is far more prevalent than use of ordinary bicycles. Naturally, FIETS-NL is mindful of the health and sustainability aspects.
